Himalayan Arabica coffee farming Dagana

My name is Jigme Choden, the founder and licensed pioneer of coffee plantation in Dagana Dzongkhag. What began as a simple curiosity has grown into a journey of passion, persistence, and purpose.

In 2018, my life took an unexpected turn—all because of a single coffee plant. That plant was given to me by the former Gup of Tsendagang Gewog, who had already established coffee cultivation on his own farm. At the time, I accepted it with little expectation—just a small trial, an experiment to see if coffee could grow in my land.

But that one plant changed everything.

As I looked around, I noticed that a few households across different gewogs were already growing coffee plants. These small yet promising signs gave me confidence. Inspired by their efforts, I planted my single coffee sapling on my farm and began to care for it with patience and hope.

To my surprise, within just one and a half years, the plant thrived. It produced a healthy yield, proving that coffee could grow successfully in Dagana’s soil and climate. That moment became my turning point—it was no longer just an experiment; it was a vision.

Motivated by this success, I started nurturing coffee saplings from 2018 onward. Slowly but steadily, my small trial expanded into a larger commitment. By the following year, I had planted 750 coffee plants on my farm, marking the true beginning of my coffee plantation journey.

By 2021, my farm began producing coffee cherries in good quantity and quality. Seeing the fruits of my labor was deeply rewarding—not just for me, but as a sign of new opportunities for farmers in my region.

What started with one plant has now become a source of inspiration. It reminds me that even the smallest beginning can grow into something meaningful with dedication and belief.
