Tea story
Tea was first cultivated near Samcholing Palace during the reign of the second king, His Majesty Jigme Wangchuck. The original saplings were gifted from Darjeeling and were initially planted near the palace, where they were used exclusively for preparing butter tea for royal processions.
Years later, in 2009, tea cultivation was revived through the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Royal Government of Bhutan, with support from Genetic University of South Korea. By 2022, with support from Queen’s Project Office(OGOP), the journey evolved into producing black and oolong tea.through collaboration with TICA
The mentorship of Mr. Sebastian, Mr. Kelvin, and Mr. Pedro, I learned to craft eight varieties of tea, introducing White Peony and Awa Bancha along the way.
Today, at the heart of this journey is the Samcholing Green Tea Cooperative. a growing community effort dedicated to self-sufficiency, environmental care, and sharing the unique taste of Bhutanese tea with the world.
