Founder & Story

Bhutan Superfood and Herbs was founded by Thinley Yangzom, daughter of highland farmers from Paro. Growing up watching her parents grow red rice, buckwheat, other crops  without a drop of chemical, Thinley saw two things: 1) Bhutan’s food is already superfood, and 2) farmers weren’t getting paid fairly for it.

In 2018 ,she started Bhutan Superfood and Herbs to bridge that gap. Today we work directly with many smallholder families across Paro, Bumthang, Haa,  Samtse and Tsirang to bring Bhutan’s heirloom grains, native herbs, and wild-foraged tonics to modern kitchens.

Our Mission

Make Bhutan’s traditional foods profitable for farmers and accessible for wellness seekers.

We believe health should not come from imported powders, but from food grown in clean air, glacial water, and living soil. And we believe the people who grow it should thrive.

What We Do

Heirloom Staples: Red rice, quinoa, buckwheat flour – stone-milled and semi-polished to keep nutrients intact

Herbal Teas: Ginger, turmeric, beetroot, and wild cordyceps teas using whole roots and herbs, no powders or flavorings

Farmer-First Sourcing: We pay 35-40% above local market rates and buy in advance so farmers can plan

Zero-Waste Packaging: Plastic-free paper packs, compostable tea bags, kraft boxes printed with soy ink

How We’re Different

Daughter-of-Farmers Lens: Thinley negotiates prices knowing exactly what it costs to weed a paddy at 2500m. Farmers are partners, not suppliers.

Organic-by-Default: Bhutan’s highland farms have never used synthetic chemicals. We document it, test it, and keep it that way.

Small-Batch & Traceable: Each pack traces back to the valley it came from. Quinoa from Paro. Buckwheat from Bumthang. Cordyceps from Lunana.

Tradition + Science: We honor how ema datshi and suja were made for centuries, while testing for curcumin levels, protein, and nitrate content.

Impact Since 2018
